The European Diploma in advanced critical care EchoCardiography (EDEC) is a curriculum in Echocardiography offered by the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) to practitioners who have acquired a basic level of competence in critical care echocardiography (CCE) and would like to extend their competencies to an advanced level. As part of the requirements for completion of the EDEC curriculum, prior to taking the exam, candidates for EDEC certification must participate in a minimum of 40 hours of advanced courses.

On January 28th 2020, an advanced course in echocardiography from the EDEC curriculum took place at the ESICM’s training center in Brussels, Belgium. During the course Reacts was used to stream live sessions from 3 ICU’s from Europe and Australia: Dr. Martin Balik was in his ICU at General University Hospital in Prague, Czech Republic, Dr. Philippe Vignon was in his ICU at CHU Limoges, France, and Dr. Anthony McLean was in his in ICU at Nepean Hospital, in Kingswood, Australia. During each of these sessions, the remote experts used Reacts to stream live transesophageal (TEE) and transthoracic (TTE) echo exams as well as video feeds from bedside monitors and respirators. Each remote expert was able to present and discuss clinical aspects of bedside echocardiography, including cardiorespiratory interactions. The unique interactive character of the presentations with experts performing live bedside echocardiography exams via Reacts from various locations around the world was greatly appreciated by the participants.

Developed by the ESICM’s Division of Professional Development, the EDEC Advanced Course on Echocardiography is designed for intensivists who have achieved a basic level of education and training in the use of echocardiography in an intensive care setting and would like to obtain an advanced knowledge and certification of their competency. Completion of EDEC training and competency-based testing designates that the intensivist is competent in advanced critical care echocardiography.
